School of the Arts
New York Chinese Cultural Center's School of the Arts offers a comprehensive curriculum of Chinese dance, martial arts, Beijing opera acrobatics and weaponry, Chinese language, ink brush painting, and paper cutting for students of all ages. Learn how to artfully master the sword or ribbon, how to create works of art out of brush and paper, or simply how to stay fit! With so many choices from beginner to advanced, there's sure to be a class that's right for you! All classes are grouped according to age and skill level.

Artist Bios
Shan Y. Chuang (莊詠善)
Shan Y. Chuang, a talented queer artist from Taiwan, excels in acting, singing, dancing, and choreography. She proudly graduated from Circle in the Square’s Musical Theater program. Shan was awarded a City Artist Corps Grant and created “10 Years In The Making, 10 Years Of Me”. With over a decade of performances in NYC, Shan's work explores themes of LGBTQIA+ identity, social justice, and self-discovery through the language of dance. She has also collaborated with MOCA on several productions. IG @shanychuang
Tony Chuy (朱超然)
Master Tony Chuy began training at 14 in Hong Kong, under Grandmaster Lam Hay (Northern Eagle Claw and Choy Lee Fut styles). He later became a disciple of the Praying Mantis system under Grandmaster Brendan Lai and Grandmaster Chiu, Chuk-Kai. He also became proficient in Chinese weaponry. He has judged and refereed at tournaments since 1979. In 1982, with his teachers’ permission, he established the “Praying Mantis Martial Art Institute” in NYC. Master Chuy and his students have participated in over 300 martial arts and lion dance performances throughout NY and NJ. Master Chuy's goal is to promote Chinese martial arts and its philosophy and benefits with the West.
David Fung
David has trained in martial arts since he was 12, and is a 35th generation Shaolin disciple, given the name Heng Tong. He trained under 34th generation disciples Master Guolin and Master Chao Hai. David has performed demonstrations at notable venues such as the United Nations, the Chinese Embassy, the Shaolin movie premiere, and the Met. David has judged and competed in international tournaments with first place finishes, and worked on martial arts choreography with groups including Madonna’s MDNA Tour and Theatre Group Dzieci. In addition to his martial arts training, David is certified in Shaolin History and Philosophy.
Shuning Huang (黄舒宁)
Shuning Huang, born and raised in Nanjing, China, received her MA in Dance Education from NYU, and BA in Dance Studies from Beijing Dance Academy. She started dancing at 6 years old, studying Chinese dance and ballet, before shifting to modern dance in her undergraduate studies. Her training encompasses Chinese (classical and folk) dance, modern/contemporary, ballet, and jazz. NYCCC aside, she also dances under Six Degrees Dance, and has performed at Lincoln Center, Queens Museum, Mark O'Donnell Theater, Culture Lab LIC, The Tank, Dixon Place, and New York Botanical Garden. Nico Li (李雪馨)
Hailing from Dalian, Nico Li performed as a young dancer throughout China, Asia, Europe, and the US. She earned her BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase in 2009, and has since lived in New York where she performs, teaches, and creates. Her works have been presented at Dixon Place, Gowanus Art+Production(GAP), Jacob’s Pillow, Triskelion Arts, the New York Chinese Cultural Center, Art of Movement, the West Coast Asian Studies Conference, and Lee Foundation Theater in Singapore, Beijing Feng Chao Theater, among others. Nico was a senior company member of SYREN Modern Dance (2009-2019), and performer and choreographer of ChrisMastersDance (2014-2019). Nico has been dedicated to promoting Chinese culture through art for over a decade, and more recently, as the Director of Programs and Artistic Presentation at NYCCC, where she is further developing her artistic vision and identity as an immigrant artist and culture bearer.
Wanru Lin (蔺婉茹)
Wanru Lin hails from Xuzhou. She studied under renowned choreographer Jia Zuoguang, and graduated from Minzu University of China. NYCCC aside, she has worked extensively as a dancer and choreographer, for notable occasions such as the Beijing Olympics, the 89th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the inaugural Belt and Road Initiative event in the US, a flash mob at the White House, and a LNY celebration by the United Nations. In 2017, she received the US-Asia Pacific Outstanding Young Artist Award. At the 2018 Taoli World Dance Competition, Wanru was awarded The Platinum Award, Best Performance Award, and a Special Jury Award. She is the founder of Dance For The People Studio.
Yuxi Liu (刘羽西)
Yuxi Liu is a professional dancer, teacher and choreographer. She is from China and holds a B.A. in Dance Education from Beijing Normal University. She trained at the American Ballet Theater and currently teaches the ABT National Training Curriculum: Pre-Primary - Level 3. Notable performance credits include: 2020, at the Metropolitan Museum for Lunar New Year. 2017, an outstanding performance for New Year’s Eve, at Times Square, New York. 2013, at the Canadian Confucius Institute Cultural Showcase Exchange Program. 2013, at the “Twelve Days of Chinese Dance” in China’s National Theatre.
Xizi Ma (马夕子)
Xizi Ma was born in Guilin, China. She has learned traditional Chinese dance since she was young. She was admitted to Guangxi Art School and participated in the large-scale landscape panorama performance "Dreamlike Lijiang River". After graduation, she went to the United States for further studies. She founded Xizi Dance Art Center.
Tulia Marshall
Tulia Marshall, born in Vietnam, is a New York-based dancer and choreographer trained at Laguardia High School, Manhattan Youth Ballet, and the Hubbard Street Professional Program. She holds a BFA in Dance and BA in Arts Management from Purchase College, SUNY, receiving the Conservatory's Presidential Scholar Award. A finalist at Francisco Gella’s New Century Dance Project, Tulia has received commissions for Soundscape Møn Sommerkoncert in Denmark, Daniel Ulbricht's Stars of American Ballet and The New York Chinese Cultural Center. She's presented original works for Doug Varone’s Devices 8 Cohort and Battery Dance Festival. Tulia has performed worldwide at venues such as The Dock 11 Berlin, The Joyce Theater, The Open Air Stage at Orsolina28, The Park Avenue Armory, and is currently engaged as an artist with Peter Chu.
Timmy Ong (王迪铭)
Timmy Ong is a NYC-based performer and theatre artist from Malaysia, and has originated leading roles in Malaysia and the US. Recent credits: Procopio in The Sacrifice of Cassamba Becker (US premiere; Best Performance in A Play nomination in the BroadwayWorld Off-Broadway Awards), Lamont in Mr. Holland's Opus: A New Musical (world premiere), and Harriet in Isabel (debut production). As a theatermaker, he has collaborated with esteemed organizations like Riuh, A.R.T./NY and MOCA. Commissioned work include: Second Chances, Soul Food, and Catching Silhouettes. Wei Sun (孙薇)
Wei Sun, born into a family of artists, is a national certified senior teacher of guzheng, a member of the Chinese National Instrumental Association and the International Guzheng Association. She studied with the famous guzheng artist Sha Yuan. Wei’s employment of the seven-tone guzheng breaks the pentatonic limitations of traditional Chinese instruments. Wei is the principal guzheng player in the Chinese National Orchestra in New York, and has collaborated with major orchestras. She has performed at the Lincoln Center, United Nations, Merkin Concert Hall, Flushing Townhall, and Queens College Art Center. In 2017, she co-founded the folk music group StringsW. They held a successful “Echo in December” concert in Carnegie Hall, combining Chinese and western music.
Fang Tseng (曾桂芳)
Fang Tseng is a versatile performer, director, and teaching artist from Taiwan now based in NYC. She's been in multiple projects including musicals, plays, clowning, dances, music videos, and voiceovers in both Taiwan and US. Selected credits include Mulan the Musical (Singapore tour), Starry Memory (National tour in Taiwan), War+Lovers (Theater Row), Islanders3 (Gibney Theater), Bliss Street (Theatre For the New City), Drunk Shakespeare: Twelfth Night (Boozy Bards Production), Siguete Moviendo (Jorge Alberto’s music video), and FAMEME (Time Square). Xinyi Zhang (张欣怡)
Xinyi holds a BA in Classical Dance from Beijing Dance Academy, MA in Dance Education from New York University, where she received a scholarship and the Outstanding Artistry Award. Following her graduation, she performed as a lead in "My Mulan” in Toronto, and earned a full scholarship to the José Limón Dance Company's training program. In 2024, she joined the José Limón Modern Dance Company and was invited by NYU to collaborate on a large-scale multidisciplinary work "Heaven & Earth". She has served as a judge for the Youth Dance Festival competition, and collaborated with notable choreographers such as Deborah Damast, Randall Flinn, and Durell R Comedy. She possesses eight years of teaching experience in the US, in Chinese classical dance, ballet, and modern dance. Her students have consistently earned top awards at national dance competitions such as YAGP, KAR, and Show Stopper.
Bei Zheng (郑贝)
Ms. Zheng has worked all over the US since she arrived in 2000. She graduated from Hebei Art School, joined the Hebei Song and Dance Troupe in 1997 as the chief dancer, and was awarded the Wenhua Award. From 1998 to 2000, Ms. Zheng’s performances at the Chinese Spring Festival Gala won the most popular programs. In 2000, her kite placed first at the 23rd Italian International Dance Festival. In 2008, Ms. Zheng competed in NBC's "Super Star Of Dance". A leading performer at NYCCC since 2004, she became the principal from 2015 to 2016. She has since been running her own studio, Bella Dance Art. She is also the founder and principal of the YES I Can Performing Arts Center.
Jun Zhou
Jun Zhou, a New York City-based dance artist and certified K-12 educator, holds a Master’s Degree in Dance Education from NYU. Trained in multiple styles, he has performed at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Park Theater in Las Vegas, and MGM National Harbor. Notably, he opened the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Times Square. Zhou’s choreographic works have also been featured on Chinese television and broadcast live on CCTV3
Grant Zhuang (庄桂轩)
Grant Zhuang began dancing at an early age, studying at the Children’s Palace in Qingdao City, China, and eventually at Beijing Dance Academy (undergraduate), placing third in the admissions ranking. He graduated in 2009, came to the US and joined NYCCC. In 2015, he became the director of NYCCC and head of the performance troupe. In the 12 years of working in NYCCC, he has planned and performed in over 1,000 performances, and taught more than 3,000 sessions. In 2023, he opened his dance studio, Grant Dance Arts Center.
